Doctorate in Law at the UFL

The part-time doctoral programme in Law «Dr. iur.» serves to deepen students' legal knowledge, to critically reflect on their work as researchers and to write a dissertation. The aim of the doctoral programme is for students to acquire the ability to deal with legal issues in an independent academic manner. They document this ability by writing their doctoral thesis (a monograph), in which they deal intensively with a specific topic. The in-depth examination of the relevant aspects of the dissertation topic, the elaboration and answering of the relevant questions and the publication of the research results obtained create added value, in particular for the institutions involved in legislation and the application of the law, but also for the economy and civil society.

Law in practice

Many of the students are lawyers and employees of the public administration. It is important to the UFL to make students aware of the differences between dealing with a specific legal issue in a legal or administrative capacity and the academic, i.e. comprehensive, unbiased and primarily knowledge-oriented examination of a research question. The courses serve to realise these goals. In addition, the examination of the lecture content enables students to utilise comparative law as a source of knowledge for their own research and to use the solutions found in foreign legal systems as inspiration in their professional and private lives.
