Prof. Dr. DDr.hc Matthias Herdegen
Matthias Herdegen completed his law studies at the universities of Heidelberg and Cambridge, graduating with the First State Examination in 1981. In 1983, he earned his doctorate from the University of Heidelberg and passed the Second State Examination in 1985. After his habilitation in 1989, he became professor for Public Law at the University of Bonn in 1990. The following year, he received an offer for a full professorship at the University of Konstanz. Since 1995, Matthias Herdegen has been a full professor at the Rheinische Friedrich-Wilhelms-University in Bonn. He is Honorary professor at the Universidad Pontificia Javeriana (Bogotá) and visiting professor at numerous European and non-European universities, including, inter alia, University Paris I (Sorbonne), New York University (Global Law School), Universidad Autónoma de México and University of St. Gallen (HSG). Matthias Herdegen’s research focusses on Constitutional law, European law, International law, International Economic law and Biotechnology law. His recent publications include textbooks on European law (forthcoming, 25th ed. 2025), International law (23rd ed. 2024) and International Business Law (13th ed. 2023) as well as comprehensive works such as “Principles of International Economic Law” (3rd ed. 2024) and “The International Law of Biotechnology” (2nd ed. 2023). Matthias Herdegen is co-editor and author of Dürig/Herzog/Scholz, Kommentar zum Grundgesetz and of Dederer/Herdegen/Palme/Spranger, Biotechnologierecht.
