Academic Background

Lorenz Risch completed medical studies at the University of Bern, graduating with med. pract. in 1996. In 1998, he earned a doctoral degree in Clinical Chemistry under the supervision of Prof. Dr. Jean-Pierre Colombo and PD Dr. Christian Seiler. He later obtained a Master of Public Health (MPH) in Clinical Effectiveness from the Harvard School of Public Health in 2007, followed by a PhD from the Private University in Liechtenstein in 2015.

Clinical and Academic Career

Lorenz Risch received his clinical training at renowned institutions including the University Hospital Zurich, Cantonal Hospitals in Aarau and Lucerne, University Hospital Inselspital Bern, and the Academic Teaching Hospital Feldkirch. He held a senior physician position at Cantonal Hospital Aarau. In 2007, he earned his habilitation in Clinical Biochemistry at the Medical University of Innsbruck and was later appointed Titularprofessor at the University of Bern in 2015.

 

He holds board certifications in Internal Medicine (FMH, Switzerland), Medical and Chemical Laboratory Diagnostics (Austria), and is a certified specialist in clinical chemical, hematological, and multidisciplinary laboratory analytics (FAMH, Switzerland).

 

Research Interests

Lorenz’ research focuses on arterial hypertension and cardiovascular diseases, epidemiology of vitamin deficiencies and diabetes mellitus, early detection of impaired kidney function using low-molecular-weight proteins, heparin-induced thrombocytopenia, and the evaluation and optimization of diagnostic testing strategies.

 

Teaching and Professional Engagement

Lorenz Risch is actively involved in academic teaching at the University of Bern and the Medical University of Innsbruck. He has held numerous official roles, including:

  • Board Member, Swiss Society for Clinical Chemistry (SGKC, 2003–2011)
  • Board Member, Association of Medical Laboratories of Switzerland (FAMH, 2006–2014)
  • National Representative for Switzerland in the UEMS Section for Medical Biopathology / Laboratory Medicine
  • Member of FMH, SGIM, SGKC, FAMH, and AACC
